Did you know?

This succulent has an inverted growing season that runs from autumn to spring. During the summer, on the other hand, it stops growing and slows down.

Tylecodon bucholzianus, a small succulent shrub with a bizarre appearance, is native to areas in southern Africa. Here it occurs in dry conditions with minimal rainfall (up to 100 mm/year). Its specific epithet "buchholzianus" is probably a tribute to the German zoologist and plant collector Reinhold Wilhelm Buchholz.

This curiosity among succulents impresses with its irregularly shaped stem and spreading branches that resemble sea coral. The stems are whitish or grey-green and the brown flaky bark peels off with age. At the tops of the bare stems, 2-3 cm long leaves, green and sometimes tinged with red, appear during the short growing season. The leaves fall off naturally at the end of winter. Tylecodon bucholzianus is a slow-growing shrub, growing up to 30 cm tall.

Its flowers, red or pink in colour, open most often in July in our conditions.

Its life cycle is interesting. Its main growing season is from autumn to spring, while in summer it goes into a deep slumber. During this period it is important to water the plant more sparingly and to give it more of a rest. On the other hand, in winter, during the growing season, Tylecodon requires occasional watering. Due to its fragile nature, water must be handled carefully to avoid waterlogging and root rot. The plant can be fertilised with a houseplant or cactus fertiliser. This fascinating succulent plant will make a novel addition to any collection. With a little care and attention, Tylecodon bucholzianus will bring you joy with its unique appearance and unusual life cycle.
