Did you know?

The leaves of this plant can be found to be black, which is a very unusual feature in succulents.

Sinocrassula yunnanensis, also known as Sedum indicum var. yunnanense or Chinese Jade, is a rare representative of the East Asian flora, native to Yunnan Province in China. Here it grows at altitudes of 2 500 to 2 700 m above sea level. This small succulent is one of the few representatives of this area.

The plant is characterised by its small and fragile leaves, the colouring of which becomes almost black when exposed to full sun. The surface of the leaves is decorated with colourful patterns and is slightly hairy. They form dense rosettes that grow to 3,5 cm in diameter and form side plants, thus forming clumps of plants. Overall, it is a small, decorative succulent.

The flower stalks usually appear in late summer, and the bright red buds do not flower until autumn. The insides of the flowers are white, and the plant usually produces a large number of these tiny flowers. I recommend removing the stems after flowering. The plant is monocarpic, which means that each rosette blooms only once and then dies but is replaced by new ones.

Sinocrassula is also suitable for beginners, and there is a beautiful cristate form of Sinocrassula yunnanensis cristata.
