Senecio fulgens, also known as Coral Senecio, is a succulent plant with bright red flowers, to which the epithet "fulgens" refers. It can also be found under the names Kleinia fulgens, Notonia fulgens, Senecio welwitschii and even more. The plant is very similar to Senecio sempervivus ssp. grantii.
The leaves are grey to grey-green with a waxy coating and a purplish margin. It is advisable to continuously remove dead old leaves that do not fall off by themselves. The plant has many thickened underground roots which allow it to manage water more efficiently. In our area it grows up to 30 cm tall.
The flowers of Senecio fulgens turn scarlet and appear abundantly in late summer. After flowering, it is advisable to cut off the flowers just above the youngest leaves.
This succulent plant is easy to grow. If transplanted or fertilised, it grows very quickly and profusely. Water is not to be skimped on from spring to autumn and the plant can survive more watering than other species. This is not the only reason why it is ideal for beginners, as it can tolerate a lot of growing upsets and still bloom quite regularly. The plant impresses with its scarlet flowers and, if planted slightly, reveals its thickened root - the caudex - which hides another unusual dimension of this succulent underground.
