Senecio crassissimus
The plant likes a sunny habitat.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. In winter, limit watering.
It can tolerate temperatures down to -1.1 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
The leaf orientation of this plant is vertical. This is a natural protection from the sun, as the sunlight hits the leaves minimally.
Senecio crassissimus often named as Vertical Leaf Senecio or Propeller Plant. It is a succulent native to the southern part of central Madagascar, between the towns of Betroka and Ihosy.
The flattened grey-green leaves are covered with a thick waxy layer, which gives them their colour. The thick leaves have a thin purple border around the edges and their vertical structure serves to protect them from strong sunlight. The thick grey-green to purple stems eventually form trees or shrubs up to 50 cm tall.
The yellow flowers of this little old man appear on the tall stem from mid-summer to winter.
It is a very hardy succulent that can last a long time without watering. The plant can be lightly fertilised, but this is not necessary. Senecio crassissimus is an attractive and robust succulent that impresses not only with its purple edges of vertical leaves.
