Did you know?

This plant has a reverse growth rhythm. This means that it grows most during the winter and then goes into a partial dormant phase in the summer.

Senecio articulatus, known as Curio articulatus, is a succulent plant with an unusual growth rhythm. Nicknamed Candle Plant, this candle-like plant impresses with its segmented stems and deeply excised leaves. The word articulatus means articulated, referring to the segmented stems.

The appearance of Senecio articulatus is truly unique. The green leaves turn reddish-purple when exposed to intense light. The palmate division of the leaves with deep notches resembles maple leaves. Bare stems of grey-green colour are characterised by a darker green or purple pattern. The waxy coating on the surface of the stems gives them a leathery appearance and emphasises the pattern. The stems are segmented, separated from each other by narrow joints. New plants emerge from the root and spread slowly by underground shoots. In nature, Senecio articulatus grows up to 60 cm in height, in our conditions normally less. White flowers usually appear in winter.

This plant has an atypical reverse growth rhythm for the genus Senecio. The full growing season begins in early autumn and lasts until spring. In summer the plant loses its leaves and goes dormant. This characteristic makes Senecio articulatus an ideal plant for the south or east windows of dry, centrally heated apartments.

It is an attractive and undemanding plant that is ideal for beginners. It is a popular plant with customers for its quirky appearance. If you're looking for a houseplant that will brighten up your interior while taking little care, Senecio articulatus is a great choice.
