Ohio Burgundy has won several awards. It won a Garden Merit award just two years after it was created and a bronze medal from the British Sempervivum Society a year later.

Sempervivum Ohio Burgundy was bred in 1972 in America, as its name suggests (Ohio - a state in the USA). From there it quickly spread to Britain where it became very popular and immediately won several awards.

The fleshy, bright green leaves are covered with fine hairs. It changes shades throughout the year, becoming a rich red hue. It is also named Burgundy red, after the wine from the Burgundy region. The dense leaves are grouped in tight, ground-growing rosettes and grow up to 12 cm across.

In summer, the central rosette may produce stems bearing pink flowers. The plant is monocarpic, which means that the rosette dies after flowering. However, it usually offsets very quickly and will expand its population several times before dying if it has enough space to do so.

It likes rocky habitats or gravelly substrate. It requires minimal care to repair and can survive almost any neglect. It is suited to rock gardens and portable containers, where it will quickly take root and soon fill in vacant spaces with a flood of greenery.
