TIP for you:

The succulent is characterised by its strong stems and unusual scaly leaf surface.

Sedum furfuraceum, nicknamed Bonsai Sedum, is a succulent plant native to the mountainous regions of Mexico in San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato, where it grows on rocks at an altitude of about 2,100 m above sea level. Its specific epithet 'furfuraceum' refers to the scaly coating on the leaves that gives them their unique texture.

The dark green, egg-shaped leaves are covered with whitish scales that turn reddish-purple in the sun. The scales may flake off naturally. The leaves grow densely on a thick brown stem and form compact shrubs growing to a height of about 15 cm. The occasionally branching stems, together with human care, give the plant an elegant bonsai appearance.

Sedum furfuraceum flowers appear in spring and adorn the plant with star-shaped flowers in shades of white to purplish red. The individual flowers grow solitary or in clusters at the ends of the branches and last for about ten days.

This staghorn can be shaped by occasional pruning to enhance its bonsai appearance. Interestingly, Sedum can also be propagated from a single leaf. So if you are looking for an unpretentious and attractive plant for your collection, Sedum is a great choice.
