Plectranthus amboinicus variegata
A habitat with moderately diffused light is best suited to the houseplant.
Water regularly, like a typical houseplant.
It is said to tolerate short-term temperatures as low as -6.7 °C. However, the plant is not hardy.
It is a varied form of medicinal plant. It differs in its decorative coloured leaf margins and its scent is very pleasant.
Plectranthus amboinicus variegata is a variegated form of Mexican yarrow that is distributed to many parts of the world and is widely used for its medicinal properties or as a substitute for oregano. The original form probably evolved on Ambon Island from the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. The epithet "amboinicus" is indicative of this location.
The hairy leaves grow broadly ovate to ovate-delta shaped with finely scalloped margins. The green colour here is disturbed by a slight whitish similarity along the margin. A closer look also shows that the green colour on the leaf has two shades. They grow up to 4.5 cm long and 4 cm wide and are attached to the stem by a petiole up to 1 cm long. The plant has many semi-flexed stems that bear fleshy, green and highly aromatic leaves. The stems are also fleshy, cylindrical to almost quadrangular and grow up to 1,5 m long and 0,7 cm in diameter. They grow green when young and turn brown over time.
From late summer to autumn they decorate the surroundings with purple or whitish flowers. The variegated form, however, tends not to bloom.
We do not fertilize or chemically treat the plant when growing to send you a plant that is healthy. It can help fight the insidious cold sore or other diseases. It is a relatively new form and although it is becoming more widespread over time, it is still a relatively uncommon plant. It delights not only with its medicinal properties but also with its pleasant scent and beautiful similarly bordered leaves.
