TIP for you:

The overhanging houseplant is particularly pleasing with its delicate leaves, which resemble small turtles. They are the main attraction, giving the plant a cute look.

Peperomia prostrata is often referred to as String of Turtles. It grows as an epiphytic plant, which means that it grows on trees or fallen trunks, especially in rainforests.

The convex disc-shaped leaves are green in colour and show light veining and darker areas. They are very reminiscent of small turtles or their shells. The leaves grow to about 1,5 cm in diameter, so they are rather small. There are fine whitish hairs on the edges of the leaves and on the trailing stems. The stems are slender and grow to about 30 cm. Slowly the succulent grows into a dense mat and spills its stems over the edges of the container.

The flower spikes resemble upright spikes. They consist of tiny brown florets and bloom during spring or summer.

The plant is well suited to hanging pots, where its overflowing stems stand out. It does not thrive in direct sun, which can burn it. It can be fertilised if we see fit. However, it is very important to make sure it gets plenty of water. It likes humidity, dew and regular watering, which would be excessive for ordinary succulents. For the care we give it, however, it will reward us with delicate little turtles that delight anyone who looks at them.
