Pachyphytum compactum
The plant loves direct sun but can tolerate partial shade.
Watering ideally rather limited, the succulent will last a long time without water.
In winter, at least 5 °C. The plant is not hardy.
Pachyphytum lasts a very long time without watering thanks to its thick, fleshy leaves full of water.
Pachyphytum compactum, commonly known as Pachyphytum compactum var. compactum or known as Little Jewel, representing a species with considerable variation in appearance. This particular variant stands out for its intense green leaf colour.
The leaves of Pachyphytum compactum are strongly fleshy, tubular and pointed, reaching up to 5 cm in length. They grow densely crowded together and form a compact rosette. In direct sunlight, the leaves take on a purplish colour, creating an eye-catching visual effect. The drawings on the leaves, combined with the waxy coating, are unique and create decorative elements that are unparalleled in thick-leaved plants. Occasionally, this plant may form lateral rhizomes and older specimens tend to grow tall and then lodge.
Flowers appear in late spring and are barrel-shaped, red to orange with dark green or purple tips. These flowers are held above the leaves on stems that can reach up to 30 cm in length.
The succulent tolerates direct sunlight well, but requires careful watering. Prolonged waterlogging of the substrate can cause root rot. Propagation of this plant is possible by plucking a leaf which can be rooted to create a new plant. Its attractive visual appearance makes it a great addition for any succulent lover. And thanks to its low watering requirements, it is also popular as the first succulent in a collection.
