Leaves turn a light green, but change to shades of red in sunlight. During the winter, the plant retracted into a ball and unfurled again in the spring.
Orostachys iwarenge Japan is, as the name suggests, a cultivar from Japan. It differs from its original form mainly by the colour of its leaves.
The light green leaves form conical rosettes of fleshy and soft leaves. They slowly turn red in the sun. The somewhat smaller rosettes can grow up to 5 cm in diameter and spread by short stems. They branch profusely and over time the plant forms a clump. Even in a single season the plant changes its appearance considerably.
At the end of the summer, the rosettes are topped by stems up to 15 cm tall with tiny yellow to creamy white flowers. Individual rosettes gradually die back after flowering, but this does not harm the overall appearance as they are soon replaced by new rosettes.
This is a cold hardy succulent that would be suitable for the rock garden, portable containers or other places we like. Stony and well-drained soil is ideal for growing. In the rock garden, water only during prolonged dry periods. The succulent will retract into balls during the winter and will re-bloom in the spring. It will survive the Czech winter outdoors without any problems, but it must not be watered during this period. Orostachys is a very pest and disease resistant plant. The succulent is therefore a plant that can withstand very adverse conditions with only minimal care.
