Orbea wissmannii var. eremastrum
The plant likes a sunny habitat, but can tolerate partial shade.
Water regularly, but in moderate doses.
It can tolerate temperatures as low as -3.9 °C in the short term. The plant is not hardy.
The succulent has five-petalled flowers. The flowers are usually reddish in colour and orange to yellow towards the tip. Its interesting shape and colouring make it a popular unusual succulent.
Orbea wissmannii var. eremastrum, also known as Angolluma eremastrum, Caralluma eremastrum or Orbea wissmannii subsp. eremastrum, is a charming succulent plant with star-shaped flowers. It grows mainly around or under shrubs. It likes light shade rather than full sun.
The stems of this plant are grey-green, often mottled with brown or purple. The edges of the stems are lined with distinctive conical projections and the stems are 4-angled. It is a low-growing succulent with erect to emergent stems, growing up to 7,5 cm tall. It grows rather wide to form compact cushions.
The flowers are star-shaped, deeply and narrowly lobed. The five corolla lobes are usually reddish and towards the tip they are orange to yellow. Flowers appear in late summer or autumn. The buds of this plant tend to dry out and fall off during prolonged drought.
Orbea wissmannii var. eremastrum is ornamental in flower but also in its attractive stems. It is a very quirky plant, which is particularly interesting at flowering time.
