Monanthes muralis is a miniature plant that grows naturally in the rocky crevices of the mountains of El Hierro and La Palma, at altitudes of around 300 - 800 m above sea level.
This succulent plant has dull green to black leaves with raised spots. These small leaves form small compact rosettes on a densely branched shrub that grows to a height of 10 centimetres.
Monanthes muralis boasts an atypical shape of yellowish flowers with a red centre. When it blooms it is a truly unusual sight.
If the plant is overwatered and not given enough light, the compact shrub can become an unsightly clump of intertwined stems hanging over the edge of the pot. However, if cared for properly, it will form a dense, compact shrub. This can be turned into a beautiful succulent mini-bonsai, which is particularly stunning when the succulent flowers.
