Did you know?

Most plants in the Monanthes genus do better in wetter, more sheltered habitats. Laxiflora is an exception and grows in sunny locations.

Monanthes laxiflora, also known as Sedum laxiflorum, is a succulent plant native to the Canary Islands (La Gomera, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife) where it grows on rocky cliffs. The name is derived from the word "laxiflorus" - with sparse flowers.

Monanthes laxiflora is a plant with a variable appearance that can change depending on growing conditions. During drought or in strong sunlight, the leaves turn deep green, purplish red, or even white to silvery. A waxy layer covers the surface of the leaves to protect the plant from excessive evaporation of water. The stems tend to be quite thick and woody, but over time they become drooping. The plant grows to a height of 20 cm and branches profusely.

The flowers are variable in size and colour, ranging from greenish-yellow to greenish-purple and brownish-red. It usually flowers in spring.

Interestingly, Monanthes laxiflora, unlike most members of the Monanthes genus, likes rather sunny habitats. The vast majority of them prefer more shaded, wet places. The succulent can be shaped into miniature trees and the woody stems will help maintain the desired shape.
