The plant likes partial shade but can tolerate direct sun.

It is not demanding on watering, even once a week will suffice and has no problem if watering is not regular.

The temperature in which the plant is grown should not fall below 5 °C. The plant is not hardy.

Did you know?

This is a form with miniature growth and distinct patterning on the leaves. However, especially when placed in the sun, the size does not normally exceed 5 cm.

Ledebouria socialis Klipfontein belongs to the family Hyacinthaceae. The name derives from the Latin 'socialis' = allies or companions and refers to the species' habit of growing in groups or clumps. It was discovered at field number MBB 7017 in the south near Klipfontein, from which it takes its name.

During growth it forms clusters of small bulbs (about 2 cm across) in the shape of teardrops. The leaves growing from the bulbs are mottled on the upper side, the underside is dark purple and has a glossy surface. In the shade, the plant reaches a similar size to its relatives. In sunlight, however, it is usually miniature and does not exceed 5 cm in height.

The bulbs produce leaf stalks with flowers. The inflorescence may come out regularly, even several times in a single season. The delicate florets are inconspicuous and white in colour.

I recommend growing in tighter pots or bowls. You can tell when it's time to water by the delicate flaccidity of the leaves. The succulent is very hardy and can tolerate poorer light or temperature conditions and longer periods without watering. It can cope with more demanding conditions over the long term without affecting the appearance of the plant. Because of this unpretentiousness, it is popular with both experienced growers and beginners.
