Did you know?

The names of Kalanchoe tomentosa cultivars refer to the appearance of the leaves. There are Chocolate Soldier, Cinnamon and Teddy Bear.

Kalanchoe tomentosa Chocolate Soldier belongs to the Crassulaceae family. The name Chocolate Soldier translates to Chocolate Soldier and probably refers to the brown coloured leaf tips. There are several forms of Kalanchoe tomentosa, which occurs naturally in Madagascar.

The elongated, fleshy leaves tend to be full of water and are covered with thick hairs. This cultivar is particularly distinguished by its elongated leaves and chocolate brown margins. The shrub grows upright, branches and becomes woody with age. It grows slowly up to 30 cm tall and 25 cm wide.

It does not normally flower, but it may flower during spring or summer. They are then attractively hairy, yellow-green in colour and, like the leaves, the flowers show brown petal tips.

The plant can be fertilised but there is a risk of unhealthy pulling and loss of colour. On the other hand, it is advisable to place the succulent in full sun to get the best colour. It grows slowly and will be a tasty treat for many years with its chocolate tips of leaves and flowers.
