Did you know?

The epithet fedtschenkoi refers to the botanist Boris Alexeyevich Fedchenko, who was curator of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden.

Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi called Lavender Scallops, is also called Bryophyllum fedtschenkoi. Its species name refers to the Russian botanist Boris Alexeyevich Fedchenko (1872-1947), who was curator of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden. This plantis native to central and south-eastern Madagascar, where it grows on siliceous rocks at altitudes between 100 and 1 000 m above sea level.

Kalanchoe has leaves with a waxy surface and serrated margins. In summer, the leaves take on a distinctive grey-purple colour, which changes to blue-green or green over winter. The leaf margins are often reddish-purple. The slender, richly branched stems are often purple. The plant forms shrubs and grows up to 50 cm tall in the wild, but usually less here.

Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi bears pendant, bell-shaped flowers of red colour.

I recommend rejuvenating the plant every few years. The tops of the stems can be left to root to rejuvenate the plant. When growing, be careful of the first strong sun so as not to scorch the leaves. Otherwise, it is a fairly hardy succulent that is a delight with its beautiful leaf shape, aesthetic colouring and easy to grow.
