Did you know?

The epithet 'tesselatus' refers to the square net that covers the surface of the leaves of Haworthia tessellata. This creates an atypical appearance and adds to the attractiveness of the succulent.

Haworthia tessellata, also called Veined Haworthia, is a fascinating succulent plant with a characteristic pattern on the leaf surface that gives it its name (tesselatus - covered with a square net). It is one of the most widespread and variable species of Haworthia and the only one that grows in Namibia.

The leaves of Haworthia tessellata turn dark green, but change to various shades of purple-brown depending on the intensity of the sunlight and depending on the watering. The upper leaf surface is divided by longitudinal and transverse stripes into a number of translucent patches, usually square or rectangular in shape. The underside of the leaves is dotted with small warts. The edges of the leaves are covered with fine white teeth. The plants remain ground-hardy, almost lacking a stem and branching is quite prolific. The rosettes are up to 10 cm across.

The succulent flowers regularly. The small flowers are tubular and white. They appear on a stem up to 50 cm high.

This succulent plant is easy to grow. It can last up to two months without water in the warmer months of the year without any significant changes to the plant. Plants also stop growing, which usually happens during the worst summer heat. Dark green rosettes indicate a lack of light, while reddish-brown rosettes indicate an excess of light. Haworthia tessellata is therefore ideal for growing in a sheltered location. This is an attractive Haworthia that is particularly striking for its beautiful patterning.
