The succulent grows on cliffs and shady rocks in Mexico at altitudes of 1 900 - 2 300 m above sea level.

Graptopetalum pachyphyllum, nicknamed Bluebean, is a succulent plant with a unique appearance. It is unmistakable within its genus, as other species are diametrically opposed to it. It is native to the mountains of central Mexico, where it grows on shady rocks and cliffs at altitudes of around 1 900 - 2 300 m above sea level. It can also be found under the names Echeveria minutifoliata or Sedum atypicum.

This small plant is characterised by its blue-green, cylindrical leaves which turn reddish-purple in full sun. At the very end, there is a beautiful purple tip. The leaves are covered with a thin waxy coating and grow in dense clumps in small rosettes at the end of each stem. The rosettes grow to a maximum diameter of 4 cm. The succulent produces a number of offsets which eventually form dense carpets.

The flowers of Graptopetalum pachyphyllum turn greenish-white with dark red stripes and appear on tall, slender stems. In our conditions it usually flowers in spring.

Its compact size makes it suitable for low ferns or succulent gardens. However, it can also be placed in pots on window ledges. Fertiliser is in no way suitable for the plant. The plant will stand out beautifully in combination with other types of succulents or capture the eye with its fine detail. It is a small succulent miniature that rhizomes well and forms aesthetic carpets.
