The plant reproduces by means of stolons. These are the shoots on which new rosettes grow.

Graptopetalum macdougallii is native to the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Here it grows on shady rocks or, more rarely, as an epiphyte at altitudes between 1 200 and 2 100 m above sea level.

It is characterised by its bright bluish to greenish leaves arranged in rosettes. The leaves are tongue-shaped with a sharp tip and grow up to 3,5 cm long and 1,5 cm wide. The rosettes can reach up to 7,5 cm in diameter and form new offsets on long stolons (shoots). The rosettes themselves expand during the growing season and shrink during the dormant season.

Flowering comes in late winter or early spring. The star-shaped, five-petalled flowers are up to 2 cm across. The petals are whitish yellow-green, with scattered brownish spots and stripes at the base. Towards the tips they turn a pure brown colour and at the apex they are yellowish green.

The succulent plant does not respond well to fertilisation and is characterised by rapid growth. The somewhat unusual method of propagation attracts many collectors and creates an impressive attraction.
