A semi-shaded habitat or diffused light would be best for the plant.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried. Do not water in winter.

It can withstand temperatures as low as -1.1 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.

TIP for you:

Normally, like other tree cacti, they prefer shaded habitats and places with more humidity. However, they are very hardy and undemanding.

Epiphyllum ackermannii, also known by the scientific name Disocactus ackermannii and by the common name Red Orchid Cactus, is a charming epiphytic tree cactus. It is native to the tropical forests of Veracruz and Oaxaca in Mexico. This plant is considered a natural hybrid between Disocactus phyllanthoides and Heliocereus speciosus.

It is characterised by a short cylindrical main stem from which grow longer leafy parts with wavy margins. These flattened parts turn green or reddish in colour and initially grow upright, but later they bend downwards and overhang. They can grow up to 75 cm long and 7,5 cm wide. The plant also forms lateral shoots, which help it to grow larger.

Beautiful funnel-shaped flowers up to 14 cm across appear in spring and summer. The flowers turn crimson to scarlet, with a greenish throat, giving the plant a uniquely exotic appearance.

The plant can be lightly fertilized during the growing season. In the wild, as epiphytic cacti, they prefer sheltered habitats and places with more humidity. This charming cactus-like plant is best suited to hanging containers and makes an original overhanging ornament. With its attractive flowers, Epiphyllum ackermannii is becoming increasingly popular with growers.
