Did you know?

There are many cultivars of this Echeveria. Some differ only slightly from each other and the original form itself is somewhat obscure.

The epithet runyonii was named after Robert Runyon, a prominent American botanist and politician. Among other things, he served as mayor of Brownsville, Mexico, in 1941-43. The origin of this plant is not completely clear and it can be traced under different names. Originally, according to E. Walther, it was found growing in a garden in Matamoras, Mexico. The succulent has several cultivars and perhaps the most interesting of these is Echeveria runyonii Topsy-Turvy with leaves that look as if they are growing inverted. You can also find this variant in our e-shop.

It forms rosettes of silvery grey or pinkish-white leaves that can take on a bronze tinge. The leaves are spoon-shaped and end in a short tip. Overall, they are up to 8 cm long and about 4 cm wide. The rosettes usually grow to a diameter of 12 cm and the succulent grows rather close to the ground.

The flowers of this succulent are bright orange to yellow and appear on arching stems that can grow up to 20 cm. The flowers appear in late summer or autumn.

This slow-growing Echeveria does not like to be over-fertilised. It grows to a rather smaller size than is common with other tuberous plants. Echeveria runyonii is an ideal choice for growers looking for a succulent with a silvery to pink-bronze colour.
