Drosanthemum hispidum
Place in a sunny position.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
Can tolerate down to -3,9 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
Succulent is perfect for hanging containers where its flowers stand out.
Drosanthemum hispidum belongs to the Aizoaceae. It is native to southern Namibia and South Africa, but later domesticated in Spain and Italy.
The receptive leaves grow to about 1-2 cm long and 0.3 cm wide. They are green in colour and covered with fine but distinctive papillae. The papillae are also found on the stems, which also grow small hairs. The stems are relatively thin and often turn red. Overall, the shrub grows to a length of about 30-60 cm.
It produces reddish-purple flowers. These grow singly and reach a diameter of 2,5 cm.
The succulent does not benefit from fertiliser, as it would give it an unhealthy appearance. It is suitable for hanging containers, where it will stand out, especially during flowering. The fine details of the tiny papillae brighten up the scenery when the plant is not flowering.
