Did you know?

The name "brunnthaleri" was given to the succulent as a tribute to Josef Brunnthaler, who worked as a conservator at the Botanical Museum of the University of Vienna and was an Austrian botanist.

Delosperma brunnthaleri, whose epithet honours the Austrian botanist Josef Brunnthaler (1871-1914) who worked as a conservator at the Botanical Museum of the University of Vienna. It occurs naturally in the Eastern Cape of South Africa near the town of Uitenhage. The green leaves have strikingly long papillae that resemble hairs. It has tuberous roots and grows in clumps. The flowers are pinkish-purple with a yellow centre and reach up to 3 cm in diameter. This robust, hardy plant forms beautiful cushions over time and attractively complements them with a gorgeous flower.

They need adequate light, full sun is ideal for them. A well-drained soil that does not risk long-term root waterlogging suits them. They do not need much water and it is always advisable to let the substrate dry out thoroughly between waterings. When growing in a rockery, water only during prolonged dry periods at your discretion. Succulent likes occasional repotting if grown in containers. Plants are frost-hardy, and although not strictly necessary, it does them good to cover them with non-woven fabric for the winter to protect them from hard frosts.
