Did you know?

Cryptanthus Ruby grows sedentary on the ground, making it stand out among other bromeliads that live epiphytically in the tree canopy.

Cryptanthus Ruby is a Brazilian endemic of the bromeliad family. Its name comes from Greek and means "hidden flower", referring to the inconspicuous flowers hidden in the heart of the plant. This bromeliad differs from its relatives in that it does not grow in the canopy of trees, but on the ground, where it becomes a charming ornament. It is known as Earth Stars.

The leaves of the Cryptanthus tend to be elongated, tipped with a point and, with proper care, can boast a wide variety of colours. Greens, yellows, browns, pinks, purples and reds alternate on the leaves to create stunning patterns, complete with a stripe down the centre. The interestingly wavy edges of the leaves add even more elegance to the plant. Cryptanthus Ruby forms lateral offsets to form ground rosettes 15 cm in diameter.

Clusters of small white flowers appear in the centre of the plant, which give way to new plants growing between the leaves after flowering.

It can be grown as a houseplant but can also be grown as a typical succulent. Unlike other bromeliads, it is not watered in the central rosette but directly into the substrate or saucer. It can be fertilised in summer to encourage growth, for example with houseplant fertiliser. Cryptanthus Ruby is an ideal choice for growers looking for an unpretentious yet beautiful plant that will brighten up the interior with its colourful foliage and small flowers.
