Crassula schmidtii White
The plant likes a sunny location.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. In winter, we limit watering.
It can tolerate -1.1 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
I recommend removing the remains of the faded flowers to improve the growth of new side shoots.
Crassula schmidtii White, also known as Crassula exilis subsp. schmidtii or Crassula schmidtii var. alba, is a charming succulent plant native to the Cape Province of South Africa. It is nicknamed Fairy Tongue.
This low plant, growing to 10 cm, forms dense and compact clumps of thin, hairy stems, which are decorated with small green triangular leaves 2,5-4,5 cm long and 4-5 mm wide. The surface of the leaves is covered with fine dark dots and the margin is furrowed. In full sun the leaves turn slightly brownish red.
However, the main attraction of this fat leaf is its magnificent flowering. During the summer, rich clusters of tiny white flowers appear at the top of the stems, giving the plant its fairy-tale appearance. Due to the abundant flower production, the compact shape of the plant is slightly lost at this time. I recommend removing the inflorescences after flowering to encourage the growth of new side shoots.
The plant does not like any fertilization and loses its compact shape and becomes an unsightly shrub when it is over fertilized. Crassula schmidtii is available in a variety of forms that vary in flower colour and shape. The White form (var. alba) is characterised by its dirty white flowers. The plant with its fairy tongue speaks to the grower with its delicate elegance and beautiful flowers.
