Did you know?

Crassula perforata Penhoek Pass with unusually large leaves, native to the Penhoek Pass in the Eastern Cape, has been identified as a separate variant and named after the place where it was found.

Crassula perforata Penhoek Pass represents a form of the highly variable Crassula perforata from South Africa in Queenstown and Aliwal North, in the Eastern Cape. Its name refers to its place of origin, Penhoek Pass, where it was discovered. The epithet perforata in turn means pierced, punctured. It thus refers to the growth of leaves that grow as if they were impaled on the stem.

The thick, fleshy leaves tend to be heavily contracted at the base and fuse with the opposite leaf. The colour is grey-green with a hint of red at the edges. The slender stem turns grey-brown. Initially it grows upright, but gradually becomes prostrate with age. The whole plant can grow up to 1 m long.

Small flowers may appear from spring to autumn.

Do not fertilise the succulent. It can also be grown in hanging pots, where it will start to droop over time and form stunning green overhangs. Crassula perforata Penhoek Pass with its clustered leaves is a good choice for collectors who enjoy the geometric precision of leaf growth.
