Crassula nudicaulis var. herrei
Place ideally in full sun or partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can tolerate -6.7 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
The deep red edges of the leaves contrast beautifully with the rest of the plant. The latter is mainly green to yellowish in colour.
Crassula nudicaulis var. herrei, also known by the synonyms Crassula herrei and Globulea nudicaulis, is a succulent plant native to South Africa (Western Cape to the Orange River). Its leaves can be found in a variety of colours, sizes and shapes depending on its natural growing location from its wide range of distribution.
In winter, the leaves are dark and deep green, while in summer their colouration changes dramatically. The edges of the leaves turn a deep red, contrasting sharply with the rest of the leaves where the green is mixed with yellow. In addition, the green surface of the leaves is dotted with many small red dots in midsummer. Yellowing and dropping of the lower leaves from below is a natural phenomenon. It is compact and grows to a maximum height of 25 cm. The plant is small and branches profusely, giving it a shrub-like habit.
The flowers of Crassula nudicaulis var. herrei are small, greenish and upward pointing. Flowering appears in late winter.
Crassula is an undemanding plant that produces succulent leaves. I recommend not to fertilise it. It is a good plant for the succulent garden, where it will attract attention with its red leaf margins.
