Crassula marnieriana, commonly called Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana, is a charming succulent plant with bright green leaves that resemble beads or buttons strung on a thread. Its leaves are essentially conjoined in pairs, with only a small hole in the middle through which the stem grows. It is also sometimes called Crassula Hottentot or Jade Necklace.
In sunlight, the leaves of this fat plant take on a variegated and beautiful red color, while in the absence of light they remain a deep green and grow far apart. The stem is flexible at first but becomes woody over time. The stems initially grow alone but later branch out on their own to form an overhanging shrub. The flowers of Crassula marnieriana are rather small, whitish and bloom in considerable numbers. In our conditions it flowers regularly.
This succulent plant is easy to grow. It is also suitable for hanging containers where it forms an interesting waterfall over time. Its atypical appearance is greatly aided by its leaves, which seem to be strung on a stem. If you are looking for an inexpensive necklace option for your wife, Crassula marnieriana is for you.
