Did you know?

The name 'hemisphaerica' refers to the shape of the rosettes. These take on a hemispherical shape and grow slowly, low to the ground.

Crassula hemisphaerica, a succulent plant native to the Cape, has won over growers with its compact shape, thick and fleshy leaves and undemanding nature. This fascinating plant is very similar to Crassula pseudohemisphaerica and is therefore often confused with it. The Latin name 'hemisphaerica' refers to the hemispherical shape of the rosettes that are characteristic of this Crassula. In the wild it grows on sandstone or quartzite derivatives, on gentle slopes or in depressions.

It is characterised by its relatively thick and fleshy leaves, which range in colour from green and grey-green to brown-green. They can reach up to 5 cm long and 3 cm wide. The leaves grow in backward curved and tightly packed rosettes. The whole plant usually grows in a single rosette, but occasionally a second or third rosette will appear. Growth tends to be rather stunted and is highest at flowering time.

It produces small white or cream flowers which appear on upright stems up to 15 cm high.

Crassula hemisphaerica grows very low and rather slowly. Propagation is quite difficult, so it is quite collectible. Fertilization is not recommended. On the whole, it is a beautiful and unpretentious succulent plant that will brighten up your collection and add a touch of African exoticism to your home.
