Crassula atropurpurea var. cultriformis
Place in a sunny position.
Water every few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
Can tolerate down to -1.1 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
Native to the Karoo region of southern Africa. This is a semi-desert area where many species of succulents thrive.
Crassula atropurpurea var. cultriformis is native to the arid regions of the Karoo. It can also be found under the names Crassula cultriformis, Crassula cultriformis ssp. robusta, Crassula cinerea.
It impresses especially with its fleshy leaves, in a wide range of colours from green to reddish. The leaves are rounded and usually smooth. The plant produces short main stems up to 6 mm in diameter. However, it branches profusely to the sides and its stems can be both hairy and glabrous.
White flowers appear in spring or early summer.
The succulent does not like to be fertilised. Placing it outdoors will greatly benefit its colouring, the colours are more vibrant and have more red hues. There are different forms of appearance and plants in cultivation grow smaller than specimens growing in the wild. It is thus such a lovely succulent with admirable shape and leaf colour.
