Cotyledon tomentosa variegata
Plant likes sunny sites, can tolerate partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. In winter, limit watering.
It can tolerate -3.9 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
This form is characterised by the handsome, cream-coloured stripes on the plush leaves.
Cotyledon tomentosa variegata, called Bear's paws, is a variegated succulent shrub. The original green form is native to South Africa.
The leaves of this succulent are bright green with irregular yellowish to cream coloured stripes and tend to be hairy. The shape and appearance are reminiscent of bear's paws. The lower leaves gradually dry out naturally and the cotyledons shave off. The plant has a thin woody stem and grows up to 30 cm tall. It is an attractive succulent shrub with densely branched stems.
Cotyledon tomentosa variegata produces bell-shaped flowers that appear mostly in early winter. Flower colour ranges from beige through various shades of yellow and yellow-orange to almost orange or pinkish.
It is slower growing than the basic green form and is a more delicate form than the original. It requires plenty of light and warmth over the winter. Its compact growth and interesting appearance with cream stripes make it a popular addition to succulent collections.
