Did you know?

The name Red Horn refers to the red colour of the end of the tubular leaves and their shape.

Crassula ovata Red Horn, also known as Crassula ovata Red Coral or Crassula ovata Gollum Variegata, is a fascinating form of the Crassula ovata cultivar native to South Africa. The name Red Horn refers to the red edges of the leaves, which become more intense in sunlight or in dry, cool conditions.

The leaves turn bright green with yellow or cream tips and reddish edges. They are obovate and slightly elongated, giving them a tubular shape. In spring, however, it is necessary to protect the plant from direct sun so that the leaves do not burn. They form a small succulent shrub with few branching stems that can grow up to 90 cm in height and 60 cm in width, but it takes a longer period of time to reach this size.

This cultivar is unlikely to flower.

If cut correctly it can be made into a succulent bonsai and, if deemed appropriate, can be lightly fertilised with, for example, cactus and succulent fertiliser. Crassula ovata Red Horn is considered a symbol of good luck and is collectible. It is an easy to grow plant that is ideal for beginners. The bizarre leaf shape is particularly striking in full sun, when the red colouring of the edges is most intense.
