Bulbine frutescens, is a succulent plant native to South Africa. This medicinal plant has won the hearts of growers not only with its beautiful flowers, but also with its medicinal properties similar to Aloe vera.

It has long green leaves that turn brownish red in sunlight and dry conditions. With time, the plant accumulates a large number of densely ruffled leaves that are covered with a waxy coating. The lower leaves wither with prolonged drought, giving the plant its characteristic appearance. The succulent has underground rhizomes and branches, making it grow into a fairly large shrub. It grows to a height of about 45 cm.

The orange-yellow flowers are collected in raceme-like inflorescences which appear on tall stems in spring and summer.

The plant is hardy and can withstand prolonged periods of drought. Bulbine frutescens is valued for its medicinal properties. The juice from the inside of the leaves has strong antiseptic effects and a broth made from the fresh leaves is used in Africa to soothe coughs, for colds and to combat arthritis. The juice of the pulpy juicy leaves is a healing balm for abrasions, boils, chapped lips, burns, cold sores and inflammatory insect bites. To make it safe to use, we do not fertilize or chemically treat it when growing. If possible, we recommend the same practice at home. The beauty of its flowers, resistance and medicinal properties are guaranteed to win admiration and become an ornament of your home and medicine cabinet.
