Aloe humilis
The plant prefers partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. In winter, limit watering.
It can tolerate -3.9 °C in the short term. However, the plant is not hardy.
This is a very hardy succulent. It can be said to be one of the hardiest succulents ever.
Aloe humilis, formerly known as Aloe perfoliata var. humilis, is a succulent plant with a number of synonyms, including Blue Dwarf Aloe and Spider Aloe. The name "humilis" comes from Latin and means "low, growing near the ground". It refers to the dwarf habit of the plant, which remains compact throughout its life and does not exceed 15 cm in height. Aloe humilis is found in South Africa, both in coastal areas and at altitudes above 1500 m above sea level. It can be found in exposed places with full sun as well as in the shade of shrubs or other plants. It was described as early as 1771.
The leaves of Aloe humilis turn blue-green, but in lighter habitats they can also turn grey-green and green in winter. The colour of the leaves varies depending on the amount of sunlight and watering. Leaves are covered with growths that are denser on the underside. In summer, the wax on the surface of the leaves produces beautiful patterns. Aloes are prolific offshooters, so that a mature rosette of about 10 cm in diameter will eventually be joined by many young plants around its circumference.
The flowers turn bright colours, from orange to scarlet combined with green. They grow in sparse clusters on stems that can reach up to 35 cm tall.
This succulent plant tolerates dry air well and reliably survives long periods of drought. In this case, the leaves dry out at the tips and bend more towards the centre of the growth, which protects it from sunburn. Aloe humilis is rightly considered one of the hardiest succulent plants. Some even confidently rank it as one of the 10 hardiest succulents. It is ideal for beginners and experienced growers alike, and its attractive appearance and low maintenance make it a great choice for any collection.
