Did you know?

This plant has two names. One is Aloe Bright Star and the other is Aloe Donnie.

Aloe Donnie, also known as Aloe Bright Star, is a cultivar bred by Kelly Griffin at Rancho Tissue Technologies. Griffin has developed 15 hybrid succulents in his lab, which he has grown in tissue culture. He named them after 1950s gangsters, creating the "Retro Gang" series. They include Jimmy, Rocco, Rico, Tony, Donnie and Vinnie. Rancho Tissue Technologies probably later changed the name of the company, which is why there are two names for each of the 15 cultivars, in this case Aloe Donnie and Aloe Bright Star.

Aloe Donnie forms rosettes of fleshy leaves. The leaves turn grey-green with white spots and finely toothed edges of deep pink to red. With age, the plant forms offshoots that cluster around the parent plant to form a compact group of rosettes. Individual rosettes grow to a height and diameter of about 10 cm.

Delicate spikes of tubular red flowers appear on Aloe Donnie in summer and autumn.

As with all succulents, it is important that Donnie never stands in water. Water only when the substrate is completely dry. If desired, the plant can be lightly fertilized. Its attractive appearance makes it a beautiful addition to any succulent collection. It is such a beautiful, atypically coloured, low-growing Aloe.
