The creamy edges of the leaves turn a beautiful shade of red when exposed to direct sunlight. The Agave shines with several different coloured stripes and dominates its surroundings.
Agave lophantha Quadricolor is a colourful jewel among succulents. It is sometimes called Agave univittata Quadricolor, Agave kerchovei Pectinata or Agave lophantha Goshikibandai. The epithet Quadricolor translates to four-coloured. It thus refers to the multi-coloured stripes on the leaves.
The lance-shaped leaves have margins edged with dark red teeth. The creamy stripes along them turn red in direct sunlight, giving the leaf several distinct stripes of colour. The rest of the leaf is green again, and cream stripes may form from the centre onwards. The succulent forms quite large rosettes, up to 45 cm tall and 60 cm across. It branches from the base and forms clumps.
Flowering has not yet been observed in this Agave.
The succulent is best suited to portable ceramic containers, in which it can be placed in a habitat where it will dominate its surroundings. It can be lightly fertilized if deemed appropriate. Agave lophantha Quadricolor is a great choice for creating a solitary landmark indoors or summering in your garden.
