Did you know?

The epithet "Zwartkop" means black head. It refers to the black colour of the rosette, which changes during the year. In winter, the leaves can be light green with a slight brown tinge around the edges.

Aeonium arboreum Zwartkop, also known as Black Rose or Aeonium arboreum Schwarzkopf, is a charming cultivar of the succulent Aeonium arboreum. The name 'Zwartkop' comes from the Dutch and means 'black head', which perfectly describes the deep purple, almost black leaves of this plant.

The leaves of this eonium are arranged in large terminal rosettes. Old leaves naturally fall off to form bare stems. These are very thin at first, but become sturdy over time. The plant has a tree-like growth habit and collector's specimens can grow up to 90 cm tall.

The flowers of Aeonium arboreum Zwartkop are yellow, star-shaped and arranged in large conical racemes on stalks. However, flowering is very rare.

The unique feature of Aeonium arboreum Zwartkop is its variable colour. During the growing season the leaves turn dark purple to black. In winter, the colour fades and the leaves turn green with a soft brown edge. This phenomenon makes the plant a popular houseplant and one of our bestsellers.
